E65 730d

These seem cracking good value for a top of the range German flagship.
I have my eye on a 2005 90,000 miler with FSH and all the toys for £7995.
Seems to good to be true. What could possibly go wrong?

A Brief History. The E65 BMW 7 Series is almost certainly the least loved 7er of all time but much of its public malign is probably due to poor timing. When Chris Bangle led the team to develop.

I've been tempted by these for a while now (possibly a 750i ), I think being a 7 they seem to fly under most peoples radar. When you compare to a similar mileage E60 530d there's often hardly any difference in used price, yet you get a lot more kit in the 7.
I'd say go for it - what could possibly go wrong.?

The catch is the size of the car. Also a public misconception that these should only be chauffeur driven or for exec airport taxi runs so people 'settle' for a 5 series instead. I'd imagine it shares most of its toys etc with an E60 with perhaps only things like Dynamic Drive or those kind of chassis specific gadgets that could catch you out?I have my eye on a 2005 90,000 miler with FSH and all the toys for £7995.

I love the 7's and as has been said compared to the 5's they are a real bargain

Having had a selection of 5's & 3's I recently took the plunge with an AUC 2007 730d and, until you try one it's hard to believe how much better it is than the 5. Build / ride quality is much better and it has so many little touches you don't find and can't get in lesser bm's. Every drive is a pleasure and it can really hustle when you want to. Interestingly, BMW chose not to put it's flagship car on runflats...
Without question one of the best value cars on the road and, in facelift form (can't speak for earlier cars), very reliable and only marginally more to run than a 530d whilst often cheaper to buy (esp if you look for similar specs).

Have to agree, so much more car than a 5 series.
Had some great times in this 730d sport, and keep thinking I will buy a facelift 750i when they are at the price you don't have to think about it.
See there is a nice 59 plate 750i at £16k on autotrader, that is very tempting.
That is a lot of car for £16k, only 60k miles as well.

I've run an E65 from nearly new. Had it now almost seven years and still love it. In terms of quality and fit and finish it's a leap above the E60 and a world apart from my wife's E92. The only car that has come close to replacing it is an F01, but my E65 just soldiers on and on and there's really no good reason to spend the dough. For my 40th next year I'm going to treat myself however..Edited by bennyboydurham on Saturday 31st May 04:49

I went to the dealers yesterday and took a look at the car.
It's a pre-facelift 2005 730d SE on 94000 miles up for 7995.
http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/b..
First impressions were it's HUGE! (and I drive artics for a living) but it oozed quality. The leather was spotless and the paint was flawless. I couldn't find a mark on it. Everything worked as it should as far as I could tell. I didn't take it up the road as I knew if I did I would be reaching for my wallet and I'm still researching these cars before I buy.
I was a little disappointed with the technology. The car is over 9 years old but I expected bluetooth instead of an old fashioned mobile hidden in the dash board and DAB is missing. It also seemed to have 2 CD players, one above the glove box which is a multi CD player and also a single slot player in the centre of the dash. The i-drive system looks complicated as well.
I think I need to take a look at a facelift model as I'm guessing the tech is a bit more up to date.
Overall very impressive though.

The post facelift E65/66 cars have a few changes that are really useful such as 'proper' Bluetooth and an improved I-drive plus the 3.0d is the uprated 231hp version. Also I've read a few reviews claiming the newer cars have more reliable electrikery. Given my liking for AUC warranties if I were looking today I'd be tempted with this for under £10k

A good friend had a 03 plate 730d which he bought as a a nearly new car. Nearly 10 years and over 100k later he still has it, 2 kids grown up trying to trash the inside and it's been a real workhorse and scrubs up very well. The car leads the way with bmw tech but like all old cars it shows it's age in that department. Reliability wise it's been pretty good considering the age and miles.
He's thinking of changing it soon for another as soon as the 8 speed gearbox cars drop a little in value.

Don't buy a pre facelift, not for that money, £4k maybe, but not £8000.It's a pre-facelift 2005 730d SE on 94000 miles up for 7995.

+1. Daft money for a pre facelift. The facelift made it a much better car, go late '05 and beyond for the ones with proper Bluetooth. The idrive was also much improved and is faster. Monday 2nd June 2014
